Center County proclaims July 18 Parks and Recreation Professionals Day

The Center County Board of Commissioners adopted Proclamation 35 on July 15, 2025, declaring July 18 Parks and Recreation Professionals Day in Center County. The board voted unanimously to adopt the proclamation after brief presentations by representatives of the Pennsylvania Recreation and Park Society.
Emily Schnalba, director of communications for the Pennsylvania Recreation and Park Society, told commissioners the statewide organization provides “industry leadership, professional development, advocacy, and resources” for parks and recreation workers and volunteers. She noted the society’s GoodForPA.org site, which lists more than 6,500 parks across Pennsylvania and searchable park amenities.
Todd Roth, president of the Pennsylvania Recreation and Park Society board, said parks and recreation professionals work in “teaching your kids how to swim,” running day camps and youth sports, and operating pools and trails. “Our goal is to just make our communities a better place to live,” Roth said.
Commissioner Concepcion echoed those remarks, saying outdoor recreation contributes to the region’s economy and quality of life and highlighted local offerings from preschool programs to swim teams. Commissioner Dershow added that many residents rely on parks for a range of outdoor activities and praised the planning and labor that keep parks functioning.
The proclamation was offered by a motion from the board and carried by voice vote. The board thanked the presenters and encouraged residents who see park staff on July 18 to say thank you.
The proclamation establishes a public recognition; it does not create a new program or change funding. The presenters noted state-level programs and websites for residents seeking park information.
