Major Gonzales, town commander, told the Miami Lakes Town Council on July 26 that crime categories remain low and that the department’s summer initiatives are continuing.
Gonzales said the town’s July 4 celebration had a large turnout and "no incidents." He announced National Night Out will be held Tuesday, Aug. 5 at Veterans Park from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.; the department plans an interactive program with a short community bike ride portion. The department is also preparing traffic deployment for the start of the new school year, with extra officers planned at key schools and intersections.
Traffic enforcement data presented by Gonzales for the month included 436 contact interactions during the traffic initiative, 244 written citations, 192 verbal warnings and 17 parking citations. The department reported vehicle burglaries down about 25 percent on separate statistics staff maintains.
Why it matters: Public-safety briefings set expectations for residents about planned events (National Night Out), summarize patrol results and outline traffic mitigation for the school year. Council members praised officers’ performance during public events and urged continued coordination with public‑works staff on construction and traffic impacts.
Operational notes: Gonzales said overtime funding and minimum staffing for traffic initiatives were important contributors to reductions in burglary and vehicle-related crimes; the department will meet on next year’s budget for staffing and continued initiatives. Council members asked for coordination on construction projects that may affect dismissal times, and the police commander confirmed plans include officers stationed at identified hotspots.
Ending: The department will continue outreach for National Night Out and finalize school-year traffic deployments; residents were reminded to register for local emergency alerts (Everbridge) for hyperlocal warnings.
