Ronnie Henson, who said he runs Sunrise Ministry on Gray Highway, told the board the ministry is an agency of the Middle Georgia Food Bank and typically distributes food to about 150 to 200 people from its site. "We get a food truck once a month, averages between 30,000 pounds of food," Henson said, adding a typical distribution requires unloading 12 to 16 pallets and a volunteer crew of about 20 to 25 people.
Henson asked the board for permission to install a 16‑foot‑wide by 50‑foot‑long shelter near the playground circle at the ballpark. He said the ministry would cover all costs and that local contractor Max Steele had offered to help with erection. "It will be big enough to get all of our pallets," Henson said, noting the shelter would keep donated food dry during unloading and could provide covered seating for parents and guardians near the playground.
A motion to grant the request received a second and passed on a voice vote. Commissioners praised the ministry as a community partnership and thanked county staff who assist at distributions. The board did not make any capital appropriation; Henson said Sunrise Ministry would fund the shelter and coordinate construction with county parks staff.
The county's approval is limited to permission to use the ballpark area and construct the described shelter; permit, site‑plan and safety requirements will be addressed through county staff coordination before erection, county officials said.
