The city said school resource officers attend specialized SRO training within a year of assignment to clarify the line between criminal law and school discipline. Officials said the presence of SROs tends to de‑escalate situations and that the district had praised the current SRO assigned to local schools.
Staff outlined current deployment: the department had two SRO positions earlier but staffing constraints left one officer covering multiple campuses; the district has asked for another SRO and the city reported it has advertised for interest. Council members asked about metrics for success; staff said many relevant interventions are informal supervision and conversations that are not quantified as arrests or citations, and that documenting every engagement can interfere with the officer’s ability to have spontaneous, organic interactions at campus sites.
Public commenters generally supported SRO presence as a deterrent to school violence; one longtime district representative urged continued partnership. Council approved the contract extension on the consent calendar (Item 2.3).
