The Sweetwater County Board of County Commissioners on July 15 approved a contract renewal with the Wyoming Military Department to continue a regional veterans services arrangement through 2028.
Human Resources Director Gary McLean explained the county has delivered veterans services across a tri-county area (Sweetwater, Sublette and Lincoln counties) since 2012 under a mutual agreement. Under the contract extension, the state reimburses the county for mileage and a loaded hourly rate to provide services in areas the state previously served through a traveling program. McLean said one county staffer travels regularly to other counties (for example, providing services to Uinta County on Wednesdays) and that, if that staffer works every scheduled Wednesday, the state reimbursement averages about $24,071 annually; the contract amount from the state is reflected in the meeting materials as approximately $75,000 to cover multiple expenses.
McLean and commissioners discussed the program model compared with the state's traveling roadshow approach and noted the county's model places local, trained staff in the field with regular presence. McLean said the county provides office space and other community-level support that reduces overhead and that the arrangement allows more consistent service delivery across a broad portion of western Wyoming.
On the record: The board voted unanimously to approve contract number 25000016201 with the Wyoming Military Department and authorized the chairman to sign.
Ending: Commissioners discussed broader questions about state funding and the potential for cost-sharing across jurisdictions; no change to operations was announced at the meeting.
