DeKALB, Ill. — Acting Fire Chief told the DeKalb City Council on July 14 that a July 5 structure fire in the 500 block of Magnolia was brought under control quickly in large part because Engine 4 (Station 4) arrived in less than three and a half minutes, allowing firefighters to conduct an aggressive attack and permit occupants to remain in their home.
The acting chief described the fire in the Knowles neighborhood as one that was beginning to enter the attic when crews arrived and said the faster response from Station 4 likely changed the outcome compared with a longer response time from other stations.
"Engine 4 was on scene in less than 3 and a half minutes," the acting chief told the council, including time to don gear and respond. The chief said the placement of Station 4 and prior council support for station location and staffing "made a great decision and it showed" during the July 5 response.
Council members and the city manager thanked firefighters for the response. The city manager also said a new fire truck is in the process of upfitting and training and will be presented outside at an upcoming meeting once those tasks are complete.
No executive session or formal action was taken on the item; the remarks were made as part of reports and communications.
