County highlights developmental-disability services, endorses DSHS contract and local providers; Special Olympics recognized

Sarah Sons, Lewis County developmental disabilities coordinator, introduced members of the Lewis County Special Olympics to the commissioners on July 15 and later presented a county contract with the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) to fund developmental-disability services.
Special Olympics presentation: Sons and several coaches, parents and athletes described the local Special Olympics program, which Sons said has operated for more than 30 years and serves roughly 75 athletes ranging in age from about 8 to into their 70s. Sons and family members said the program relies on volunteers and community fundraising, noting this year’s law-enforcement torch run attracted a record 127 registrants. Coach Bob Hepner, parent Patty Nelson, parent Victoria Romero and others told commissioners the program provides year-round sports opportunities, local practice and a chance for athletes to participate in regional events.
County contracts: Sons spoke in her role as developmental disabilities coordinator about Resolution 25-199, a contract with the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services Developmental Disabilities Administration to provide funding for supported employment, community inclusion, job foundation, child development, training and community education activities as well as county administration. The board also approved Resolution 25-200, a contract to provide funding to Reliable Enterprises for child development services, outreach, nutrition, and health and fitness education. Both items were included in deliberation items approved by the board July 15.
Why it matters: The contracts authorize county administration and enable funding to local providers who deliver services to people with developmental disabilities. The Special Olympics presentation highlighted community support and volunteer involvement that supplement formal county-funded services.
Board action: The board approved a block of deliberation items that included Resolutions 25-199 and 25-200; the grouped deliberations passed by a recorded vote of 3-0.
Ending: Commissioners also encouraged community attendance at upcoming Special Olympics fundraisers (including a polar plunge in January, mentioned by a commissioner), and staff will proceed with the DSHS contract and the Reliable Enterprises agreement as approved.
