Board member Meredith reported on the June 17 CESA 2 delegate convention in Whitewater and summarized resources available to districts from the Wisconsin Office of School Safety. Meredith described CESA 2 as a cooperative education service agency that offers shared vendor partnerships, professional development and statewide collaboration; the district is in CESA 2, Cluster C.
Meredith briefed the board on a keynote presentation by Trish Hilton, executive director of the Office of School Safety at the Wisconsin Department of Justice, and highlighted statewide resources that are largely free to districts. “Part of their office success was the statewide implementation for which our district participates, in speak up, speak out,” Meredith said, adding the program is directly linked on the district website and that the state also provides a 24/7 monitored phone line. Meredith told the board that since the program’s 2020 inception the state has logged roughly 18,000 reports, “most of which are bullying related.”
Meredith emphasized prevention training and a pathway‑to‑violence model presented at the convention, saying, “The data shows that 82 percent of school shootings, appear new beforehand.” She noted the Office of School Safety depends on state and federal grants and said that current funding is scheduled to expire in September; she asked board members to contact state legislators to support continued funding. Board members added that the state budget extended funding for two more years but that permanent funding remains an open issue.
