Mitchell College adds capstone practicum, updates psychology requirement in BSN program

The college said the change is intended to support students’ readiness for entry to practice and to align the program’s clinical structure with industry norms.
The psychology change reflects a departmental revision combining two sequential general psychology courses into a single three‑credit introductory psychology course; Mitchell said the revision replaces the earlier two‑part sequence previously listed in the program plan.
Board members discussed whether these items constituted a major curriculum change; after reviewing the revised learning outcomes and course descriptions, the board treated the capstone practicum as a major change and voted to approve the proposals. Mary Dieteman moved approval; Sal Diaz seconded. The roll call vote recorded ayes from Sal Diaz, Mary Dieteman, Lisa Freeman, Camille Payne and Chair Gina Reiner.
The board noted the college must ensure that the new capstone course learning outcomes and assessment methods are documented in the official program plan and that student competencies are measurable in the 126‑hour preceptor placement. Mitchell said the capstone will support clinical application of coursework and leadership skills and will be coordinated with assigned preceptors and local clinical sites.
