Columbia County work group weighs consolidating convenience centers, marketing roll-offs to cut operating shortfall

The Columbia County Solid Waste Work Group met to review options for narrowing the department’s operating shortfall, focusing on whether to consolidate small convenience centers, how to increase tonnage at the Greenport Transfer Station, and short‑term revenue steps such as marketing roll‑off (container) services and a tiered fee schedule.

Wendy, a county solid waste staff member, opened the meeting by describing the group’s immediate goals and the information compiled for the discussion. “I just kinda thought it was important for the group itself to try to create a bit of a mission,” she said, summarizing the packet of data on station expenses, staffing and tonnage. Jim, another county staff member who assembled the spreadsheet, told the group the sheet “identifies each 1 of the stations, identifies the expenses, the tonnage of each 1.”

Why it matters: Solid-waste operations are running at a sustained deficit and county leaders must decide the service level they will fund. Panel members said short-term steps to reduce expense and increase revenue will both limit near-term losses and make the system more attractive to potential external operators if the county issues an RFP for a public‑private partnership.
