Board approves Emergis contract not to exceed $450,000 to maintain nurses in every school

The Craven County Board of Education on July 15 approved a contract with Emergis for school nursing services not to exceed $450,000 for the 2025–26 school year. Lou Anne Forsyth presented the recommendation and said approving the contract "enables Craven County Schools to maintain a nurse in every school." She told the board the recommended contract would cover seven contracted nurses; last year's contract maximum was $650,875 and covered 10 contract nurses. Forsyth said the district had shifted some nurses to Craven County Schools payroll and reduced hours for positions at lower‑acuity schools from 35 to 30 hours per week as part of cost adjustments. Board members asked whether contract nurses hold the same educational credentials as district nurses. Forsyth said all district and contract nurses possess four‑year BSN degrees and that state rule requires eligibility to sit for the national school nurse boards within three years of hire in order to qualify for certain allotments. She noted an annual staffing report to the state is required on Dec. 1 listing highest degree and board certification to secure allotments. The motion to approve the contract passed on roll call with all members voting yes. Ending: The contract will run Aug. 1–June 30; staff said they will implement the staffing plan, monitor hours and assignments, and provide reports that the district must submit to the state for nurse allotment calculations.
