HDC advisory committee approves master sign plan and two tenant signs at 0 Main Street

The Historic District Commission’s Sign Advisory Committee approved a master sign plan for 0 Main Street on July 15 and separately approved two tenant signs for the building, including a removable carved wood sign proposed by tenant Jessie Bell.
Jessie Bell, a subtenant who said she leases second-floor space from Northeast Advisors, told the panel she wanted a separate sign she could remove if she moved. “What’s important to me is that I’m able to have a separate sign from Northeast Advisors so that… I wanna be able to take it with me,” Bell said.
Committee members said the proposed locations (to the right of the door used by the chamber) and the dimensions conform to the master sign plan submission; the applicant proposed carved and painted wood signs approximately 16 inches by 6 inches, placed one above the other. Members confirmed carved-and-painted wood was acceptable under the guidelines and asked that fabricated lettering not be vinyl. The board recorded a roll-call approval of the master sign plan and then of each individual sign.
The motion language recorded in the meeting packet approved the master sign plan and both tenant signs as submitted, with carved-and-painted wood and paint applied rather than vinyl letters. Votes on the motions were recorded as affirmative by members present; one member experienced a power outage during part of the meeting and was noted as absent for some votes.
The committee explained that the portion of the building containing the neighboring tenant “Blue Beetle” is a separate parcel and not part of this plan, so the master sign plan applies only to signage on the 0 Main Street portion owned by the applicant’s landlord. The applicant confirmed wood carved and painted signs and said she preferred wood.
Next steps: staff will note the advisory approvals in the HDC packet for formal action by the full commission if required; the applicant may proceed with permitted carved-and-painted wood signs in the approved locations.
