The Public Safety Committee on June 17 granted the Public Defender permission to fill two positions: an administrative assistant vacancy created by an upcoming retirement and a full-time assistant public defender position created by a resignation.
The office asked for authority to post both positions and said salary ranges are structured by experience. A supervisor asked what would happen if the department hired an experienced candidate at a higher step than the budgeted minimum; the Public Defender's office and committee members said the budget contains flexibility and that the county would cover an applicant hired above the minimum within the approved salary range.
Both personnel requests were moved, seconded and approved by voice vote during the meeting.
