Board adopts several policy updates on instructional materials, library services and nutrition/PE

At its July 14 meeting the Arlington School District Board of Directors completed second readings and adopted a set of policy updates recommended by WASA/WASBO/WASA (as referenced by staff) and staff review.

Board policy 2020 (course design, selection and adoption of instructional materials) was adopted on second reading with no substantive changes, according to staff presenting for the absent director. Policy 2021 (library information and technology programs) was amended to remove a sentence referencing teacher‑librarians and instead uses the broader term "library staff" to match current staffing arrangements. Policy 3520 (student fees) was adopted in the same meeting (see separate article on fee schedule) and staff said the updates align board language with current law concerning withholding diplomas and student fee procedures. Policy 6700 (nutrition, health and physical education) was shortened and reorganized to move nutrition, wellness and physical education items into separate policies already approved earlier in the year; staff said the changes reflect WASA recommended separation of nutrition and wellness items into distinct policies.

Each policy was moved, seconded and approved by the board (vote recorded as Director Diamond, Director Watts and Vice President Knapp voting yes). Presenters said the changes were technical and intended to align district policy with current state guidance and board decisions made earlier in the year.

Ending: The updated policies will be reflected in the district policy manual and posted in board documents.
