Board takes first reading on 26 updated policies tied to recent legislation

The school board accepted 26 updated board policies on first reading that the GSBA prepared to reflect legislation passed this year, trustees said. The item was presented as a first reading; the board did not adopt the policies on final reading at the meeting. District staff said the packet includes the current policy, the proposed new policy and highlighted changes. The board chair said the policies will receive further review at the board's scheduled conference in Gatlinburg later this week. Board members discussed specific items including charter-school language and noted that technical, time‑sensitive steps for charter applications will be covered during upcoming training by the Tennessee School Boards Association (TSBA), staff said. A motion to accept the policies on first reading passed by roll call; the board recorded ayes and the motion carried. Board members were asked to mark questions for later discussion. Because this was a first reading, the policies are not yet final. The board expects further conversation at the Gatlinburg meeting before any final adoption vote.
