Facilities report: limited campus flood damage, targeted repairs planned before school starts

San Angelo ISD facilities staff told the board on Monday that flooding from recent heavy rains caused limited damage across several campuses and that crews are conducting targeted repairs ahead of the fall semester.

Tony Kennedy (facilities staff) and other operations personnel said custodial and maintenance crews responded during the flooding to extract water, dry carpets and put fans in place. Most schools experienced minor ceiling‑tile and carpet issues; staff said replacement and drying work is under way and that they expected affected areas to be in good shape before classes begin.

Kennedy said Reagan Elementary sustained moderate damage where water intruded behind exterior stucco and into wall assemblies. He said district staff solicited repair quotes and that one bid came in about $20,000 less than expected; the work will remove stucco, OSB and vapor barrier, inspect for mold, replace insulation and install larger guttering and flashing to prevent recurrence.

Facilities staff also said new playground areas at several campuses will be added rather than replacing older equipment at Crockett, and that contractors typically recycle removed playground equipment unless a group arranges donation and removal costs. Kennedy noted that grounds crews are working overtime to prepare fields and campus grounds for the start of school and praised custodial response during the event.

No board action was required Monday; trustees asked questions about specific campus impacts and repair timing and were told remedial work is in progress with quotes and schedules being finalized.
