District recommends contracts to abate and demolish Austin, San Jacinto buildings; trustees asked to approve next week

San Angelo ISD staff recommended contracting with Reese Albert Trucking and Building Abatement Demolition Co. Inc. to abate and demolish two vacant campus buildings — one at Austin Elementary and one at San Jacinto — and told trustees the work will include asbestos abatement, air monitoring and perimeter controls.

Jason Henry said the district discovered structural damage at San Jacinto’s building A and decided during last year’s consolidation to relocate students; Austin’s building A also is slated for abatement and demolition after assessments. Henry said specifications were prepared with King’s Consulting and three contractors bid; Reese Albert Trucking (San Angelo) and Building Abatement Demolition Co. received the highest scores.

Henry reported a total cost for abatement and demolition described in the packet as “415 $453,800,” which includes a $60,000 contingency; he said staff will follow all required asbestos abatement procedures, use third‑party air-sampling, bag and transport regulated waste to appropriate disposal facilities and maintain a six‑foot fence around demolition sites. Henry said Reese Albert was used as a reference and had performed similar work at Angelo State University.

Trustees asked about schedule and safety. Henry said demolition for San Jacinto could start as soon as Aug. 11 and should take roughly 30–45 days; asbestos abatement at Austin must precede the actual demolition there. Trustees pressed staff about nearby Head Start operations and student safety; Henry said the district would keep fencing and exclusion zones in place, remove debris promptly to trucks and follow third‑party monitoring requirements.

The administration recommended the awards; the board agreed to place the item on the regular meeting agenda next week for approval.
