Commission to consider $41,754 appropriation for upcoming special election

County election staff told the commission the county must appropriate $41,754 to pay for an upcoming special election that will include a primary and a general election. Annette, the elections coordinator who addressed the commission, said the State coordinator of elections has requested that the county be refunded but that “there is no provision in the law for us to do that.” She advised saving receipts and seeking reimbursement but said the county should not count on state reimbursement. Annette said the $41,754 estimate covers both the primary and the general and that the dates for the election had not been officially set at the time of the work session. She said the first election was likely in October, with a second within 55 days, but added, “officially, it’s not been given the date yet.” County staff said the appropriation must be approved by the commission at the upcoming Monday meeting for the county to meet scheduling requirements. No vote was taken during the work session. The elections coordinator asked the commission to approve the appropriation at the next regular meeting and said she will do what she can to seek state reimbursement.
