The Sumner County Library personnel committee voted Tuesday to forward Angela Holmes as the candidate for Westmoreland library director to a special called meeting of the full board.
Holmes had withdrawn her candidacy at the previous board meeting but emailed the committee the next day asking to be reconsidered. Committee members said they received multiple emails of support after the prior meeting, including messages from the president of the Friends of Westmoreland.
The committee discussed a comment made at an earlier meeting that appeared to rate Holmes and another candidate as among the "least qualified," and several committee members expressed regret that the comment had caused Holmes to leave the prior meeting. One committee member apologized for how the remark appeared and said the committee regretted the effect it had on Holmes.
"I want to apologize for even leaving. I think I was just so surprised at the feedback, from the board," Angela Holmes said after being invited to speak. "This job is more important than someone's opinion... I'm excited. I definitely want this job. I'm just... I know I want to give back to the community."
Committee members said they had spent time reviewing Holmes’s experience and character since the prior meeting and received letters and emails supporting her candidacy. A motion to move Holmes forward for consideration passed in the personnel committee; the committee will present her nomination to the full board at the special called meeting the committee scheduled for Friday at 3:30 p.m.
The committee also discussed allowing board members to contact candidates before the full-board meeting; the chair said she would notify the board and encourage members to reach out. The Friends of Westmoreland and other supporters were cited by committee members as having submitted supportive communications, which the chair said were forwarded to the board.
No final appointment was made by the personnel committee; the nomination will be decided by a majority vote of the full library board at the posted special called meeting.
