Personnel committee schedules special call meeting to forward library director candidates to full board

The Sumner County Library personnel committee voted Tuesday to forward candidates for two library director openings to a special called meeting of the full library board scheduled for Friday at 3:30 p.m. The committee met July 15 at 355 North Belvador Drive in Gallatin.

The action moves nominations for the Hendersonville and Westmoreland director positions to the full board for a majority vote, after the committee chair said the names would be posted and the special meeting would be announced the same day.

Committee discussion focused on logistics and next steps rather than a final hiring decision. The committee noted that Hendersonville recently lost another staff member to resignation and is "extremely short staffed," a circumstance the chair said increased urgency for a full-board vote. The Hendersonville candidate attended the personnel meeting, but the chair said board members who normally ask questions were absent (one was on vacation), so no in-person questioning took place. The committee agreed to forward the candidate to the full board for consideration.

"We're having a special called meeting on Friday at 03:30PM," the committee chair said during the meeting. The chair also said the posting for the special meeting would be posted that day.

The committee clarified procedural requirements: the personnel committee selects and interviews candidates and then forwards a candidate to the full board, which makes the official appointment by majority vote. The chair reiterated that committee decisions do not become official until the full board votes.

The committee also approved routine items including the July minutes correction and set a tentative timeline for a director evaluation for staff member Gabby to be finalized by email, with a potential date of Sept. 16 to be confirmed.

The committee emphasized the need for a full-board quorum of five for the Friday meeting and urged board members to reach out to candidates with any questions before the special call.

No formal hiring decision was made by the personnel committee at Tuesday’s meeting; both nominations were forwarded to the full board for action.
