Residents urge better district communication and warn against parental opt-outs from curriculum

Two community members used public comment on July 14 to press the Valley View School District on separate issues: outreach to non‑parent taxpayers and the impacts of parental opt-outs from classroom material. Jean Walsh, a Bolingbrook resident for 51 years, said she pays about 70% of her tax bill to the district and has little information about how the district spends those funds. "I pay you taxes and I don't know what you do with my taxes," Walsh said, urging the district to expand communications to include seniors and other taxpayers who do not have children in the schools. She suggested at‑least annual mailed newsletters in addition to social media and email and asked that the superintendent search outreach include input from the broader community. A second speaker, who identified himself as Bob and said he has three children in the district, urged the board to consider the educational and operational consequences of allowing parents to opt students out of lesson components. Bob argued such opt-outs can "rob the child of the lived experience of others" and create substantial extra work for teachers required to prepare alternate lessons and supervision for opted‑out students. He asked the board to weigh consequences for student learning and classroom staffing before adopting or expanding opt‑out policies. Board members acknowledged the comments and President Quigley and staff offered to follow up with members of the public about communication channels and the superintendent search; no policy votes were taken during the meeting.
