KENTON, Ohio — The Kenton Local Schools Board on July 14 approved an updated administrative/exempt staff handbook, adopted a new curriculum that had run as a pilot program, and approved a replacement personal-communication-device policy as a temporary measure while sample language is finalized.
Board members praised the curriculum rollout, saying the pilot included side-by-side instruction and free professional development provided by the curriculum vendor. One trustee said the brevity of the agenda language “belies the extensive work” behind curriculum adoption.
On the personal-communication-device policy, a board member noted the change is a complete replacement of the district’s prior language and will likely be updated again after vendor Neola provides sample wording aligned with new state guidance. The board confirmed the replacement is a placeholder to keep the district compliant while the policy language is refined.
The board also approved consolidation of handbooks and said the change resolved previous inconsistencies across documents. Trustees acknowledged the administrative burden in preparing the consolidated handbook and thanked staff members who led the effort, including a shout-out to Tom (staff) and curriculum lead Katie for organizing the materials and the pilot.
The board voted by roll call to approve the agenda items related to policies, handbooks and curriculum; the motions passed unanimously. The approvals were routine policy and personnel actions; board members asked staff to continue refining policy language and to return updated language when available.
