Subcommittee to separate competency-determination language into its own policy (IKFA)

The Policy Subcommittee discussed how to incorporate statewide changes to MCAS graduation requirements into district policy. Members agreed it would be clearer to separate competency-determination pathways from the graduation-credit policy: the subcommittee directed staff to draft a new IKFA policy describing competency-determination pathways and to update IKF to cross-reference IKFA.
The committee said the competency-determination document presented earlier (competency determination recommendations) lays out multiple pathways to demonstrate competency beyond passing MCAS and that placing that material in a standalone IKFA policy would make future revisions easier if the Governor’s Council or state guidance changes.
A member argued that separating the policies would avoid having to rewrite the full graduation policy if competency pathways change; staff said they would bring both IKF and the new IKFA forward together at the next subcommittee meeting so the full school committee can view them as a package before any vote.
No final wording was adopted; the subcommittee asked staff to prepare the IKFA draft and to modify IKF to reference the new policy for competency determination, then present both documents at the next meeting.
