Delray's Creative Arts School plans ceramics studio; staff say no new city funding required

Gina Carter, director of communications, told the commission the Creative Arts School has operated since November and has generated nearly $73,000 in class-registration revenue; she proposed adding ceramics to fall programming using an annex space that already has power, double sinks and a cement floor.

Carter said the proposed ceramics area sits in an annex currently used as kitchen/storage and that the space already has wiring that will support a kiln and double sinks appropriate for ceramics work. She described ceramics as "the most requested class that we get" and said, "the project does not require any additional funding. I plan to get everything accomplished within my budget. So I'm not asking for another dollar."

Commissioners and staff asked operational questions about safety, storage and DDA (Downtown Development Authority) storage impacts; Carter said the fire marshal, public works, legal, development services and the city manager had reviewed and cleared the space for the proposed use. Commissioners expressed support for the expansion and recommended proceeding through administrative approvals; no formal vote was required at the meeting because the presentation was informational.

Ending: Staff said they will proceed with administrative steps and return if additional approvals or funding requests are required. Carter highlighted an August 9 free Creative Arts Cultural Fest and said culinary classes and other programming are planned for the fall.
