Village approves ordinances redefining committees and commissions roles

The Village of Beecher Board of Trustees on July 14 approved two ordinances that revise the village's standing committees and clarify that trustees who serve on committees do not have voting status. The board voted to adopt ordinance 14-26 on standing committees and ordinance 14-27 addressing village commissions. The ordinances shorten and update committee names and restate that trustees assigned to committees act in an advisory capacity and do not cast votes as committee members. The Village Clerk presented the proposed changes and asked for motions to adopt the measures; trustees then moved, seconded and approved the ordinances by roll call. Trustee Krause, who discussed the Fourth of July commission separately, explained changes to the committee roster, saying some committee names were long and redundant and that tasks such as social media and event logistics are now handled by village staff. "We didn't have a Facebook page back in the day," Krause said, explaining why some committee names were simplified. The board did not alter the underlying limits on trustee authority; the ordinances emphasize committee members report back to the full board rather than vote on behalf of the board. The measures passed by unanimous roll-call votes following motions and seconds recorded during the meeting. The ordinances will take effect according to the village's ordinance adoption rules; the board did not announce any subsequent administrative steps at the July 14 meeting.
