Community member urges transparency on personnel and transportation issues during public comment

During the July 14 meeting, a community commenter identified himself as chairperson of the Community Diversity Council and raised concerns about transparency in the district’s human resources operations and transportation department. The commenter alleged a hostile work environment and questioned why a district insurance claim had paid for damage to a staff member’s personal vehicle after a parking-lot crash. The commenter, who registered for the meeting as Chris Miles and introduced himself in remarks as “Chris Monells, chairperson of the Community Diversity Council,” criticized the district’s response to issues reported in a June Tribune article and said people had not been heard. He asked why the district had not produced a police report for the parking-lot crash and why the school corporation had paid a claim for damage to a personal vehicle. “What I wanna know is, why did we pay for a crash that happened on private property instead of, the individual taking it himself?” he asked. Board officers and Superintendent Dr. Madison intervened to remind the speaker that board meetings are not the forum for discussing personnel matters and that the board does not hear oral complaints about specific students or personnel at public comment. A board member noted the district’s public comment policy and asked the speaker to avoid naming current employees. The commenter said he would continue to raise transparency questions monthly; the board did not take formal action on the allegations during the meeting.
