Family engagement coordinator outlines 'Cup of Comfort' program expansion, schedules June picnic

Dana Barefoot, the Colonial Heights Public Schools family engagement coordinator, told the school board on May 27 about the Cup of Comfort program she launched to provide informal support and connections for families and staff.

Barefoot said the program began with morning sessions at the tech center to give caregivers a casual place to gather, hear from support‑services staff and form peer networks. Because working caregivers asked for options they could attend, the division added evening sessions with childcare provided. Participants worked with the Office of Support Services and other staff — including translators, psychologists and social workers — and attendees requested a larger combined event; the division held a family picnic and plans another, called Cup of Comfort in the Park, on Saturday, June 28 at White Bank Park at 11 a.m. The program also uses OSS funds and occasional community donations to help provide food and supports.

Barefoot said the sessions have been especially helpful for families with children who have autism or for single parents who said they lacked other supports. The program aims to expand outreach into middle and high school families and will include information sessions, such as a Colonial Parent Academy presentation on cell phones and gaming. Board members praised the program and asked staff to return with updates as it grows.
