The Colonial Heights School Board voted to engage an architectural/engineering firm to complete a feasibility study for renovating the high school cafeteria, dining area and kitchen. A presenter told the board the high school—built in 1964—has undergone many projects but that renovating and modernizing the cafeteria and kitchen is a priority in the five-year capital improvement plan. The presenter said the feasibility study would provide design options, construction timelines and cost estimates and estimated the cost of the study at about $53,000. Board materials cited the capital improvement (CIP) reserve: $1,350,000 currently in the CIP reserve fund, with an additional $1,300,000 budgeted in the current budget and $1,200,000 proposed in next year's budget for the reserve. The presenter said the study would help the board “know exactly what we're up against” if it decides to move forward with construction. Board members who toured the cafeteria cited that the space has not changed substantially in many years and supported obtaining accurate cost estimates before advancing design or construction. The board approved engaging the firm by motion and roll-call vote.
