Mississippi Department of Marine Resources staff told the advisory commission Tuesday that commercial harvest of speckled trout is approaching the quota, with staff estimating the fishery will meet roughly 50,000 pounds in the coming month.
The director said that meeting the quota would be the first time in several years the commercial fishery met the speckled-trout allocation. Staff discussed whether to raise the quota but told commissioners the department's preference is to wait another year and review additional data before proposing any change.
Commissioners did not take formal action at the meeting; staff said they will continue to monitor landings and provide updates to the commission.
