Mayor reports new grants for recycling and senior training; county signs sewer and paving contracts, defers fire‑station bank decision

He also said the county received a $95,000 computer training grant from economic community development for the senior center that will provide laptops and training for about 40 seniors.
On county facilities, Mayor Davis said the county signed a contract with Columns Plumbing to perform sewer upgrades at the juvenile center and that work is expected to begin around Aug. 1. He said the county is also in the process of bidding a new heating‑and‑air unit for that facility.
The county signed a contract with Case Developments to pave the Menace Road parking lot. The mayor asked the commission whether it wished to remove trees and lower a bank adjacent to the fire station to create additional parking or future building space; he said estimates from contractors ranged from roughly $100,000 (without a retaining wall) to $145,000 (with a retaining wall). "I have not asked for this additional funding or this additional project, neither has the fire department," the mayor said, and he sought direction on the funding source if commissioners want to proceed.
Commissioners debated the tradeoffs. One commissioner asked that the matter be scheduled for the building and land committee so the committee could return a recommendation; the chairman agreed and asked that the committee meet soon so the parking‑lot bid could move forward if the commission decides to proceed.
