The Alexander County Board of Commissioners approved two budget amendments covering law enforcement equipment purchases and carryover funding for social services. County Attorney Ben Falconberry outlined Budget Amendment No. 1, which increases the sheriff's office budget for several items: $12,931 remaining from a state grant for law-enforcement expenses (expenditure deadline extended to June 30, 2026), emergency-management grant reimbursements of $11,990 and $12,920 tied to hurricane-response deployments, prior-year orders ($4,770 and $5,132) that vendors could not fill in FY25, and use of federal equitable-share and state unauthorized-substance tax funds plus $150,000 from capital outlay toward the planned armored vehicle purchase in fiscal year 2026. Falconberry said those funds were received in prior years and reside in fund balance, which is being used for the purchases.
Budget Amendment No. 2 increases the Department of Social Services budget to carry forward advanced state funding for adult and child protective services received in response to Hurricane Helene. Falconberry described the amendments as carryovers of prior funding into the current fiscal year. Commissioners approved both amendments by unanimous vote.
