Robert Smith, director of the City of Montgomery Planning Department, told the council he will retire effective July 31 after more than 23 years of municipal service and thanked colleagues for the opportunity to lead local planning work.
Mayor Steven Reed recognized Smith’s tenure and credited him with contributions to zoning and ordinance updates and the downtown master plan. Smith said he began with the city at age 27 and described involvement in the city’s recent comprehensive plan — the first in roughly 60 years — and the subsequent implementation work.
Smith said his time included “a lot of plans, programs, and projects” and singled out the downtown master plan as a highlight. He told the council he viewed his role as an opportunity to grow staff and foster collaborative work with other departments.
The mayor asked Smith to come forward for a recognition and asked the council and staff to wish him well; Smith offered brief remarks and the meeting included a ceremonial photo opportunity but no formal personnel action or vote was recorded during the meeting.
