City reports park, street and facility work; green-waste site briefly closed for grinding

Monticello — City Administrator Terry updated the council Monday on a number of public-works and facilities projects, including park work, downtown street reconstruction and a temporary closure of the green-waste facility for grinding operations.
Terry said replacement of windows at an unnamed municipal center finished last week. Public-works crews have been excavating a detention basin at Overhind Park and cleared trees along a right-of-way near Old Route 47 to improve access to the site. Residents raised questions about Overhind Park; Terry said he has responded directly to inquiries.
The city temporarily closed its green-waste disposal facility to allow a contractor to grind accumulated wood, grass clippings and leaves; Terry said the contractor’s work required heavy equipment and the facility was expected to reopen Wednesday. Street reconstruction continues on Main, Independence and William Streets, with contractors focusing on William Street because it adjoins the high school parking lot; Terry said he hopes work will be complete by the start of school.
Terry also noted the Monticello Recreation Foundation’s Smoke and Octane car show and barbecue competition is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 2. He said police union negotiations will begin next week and that floor repairs are under way at the firehouse (reported separately).
