Monticello — Police Chief Rob reported Monday that the department has increased staffing and shifted toward a more proactive enforcement posture while continuing to respond to calls for service.
"We're no longer a department that just sits down and waits for things to come to us. We wanna be proactive," Rob said, noting the department handled just under 1,700 responses in a six-month period. He said the force has recently operated shorthanded but now has officers in training and one officer on military leave.
Rob described routine enforcement practices that favor warnings for traffic violations aimed at slowing drivers and reducing crashes, and he said the department is also following through on ordinance abatements after complaints. "Ordinances take time," he said, noting some matters resolve quickly while others require extended follow-up.
Rob thanked Alderman Woodham for raising a constituent concern and urged residents to call the department for information rather than relying on social media. He said the department intends to conduct traffic-safety presentations in the fall and to continue investigative and training work as staffing experience grows.
No formal council action was taken; the remarks were part of the police chief’s regular departmental report.
