Board members discussed timing for annual district goal setting and the superintendent evaluation cycle on July 14 and broadly agreed the evaluation should be completed by December so the current board conducts the review prior to any newly seated members.
Staff noted Kansas statutes set the superintendent evaluation cycle with a deadline in mid-February; trustees debated whether to complete evaluation work before January when new members may take seats or to extend the review past the seating of new trustees. Several board members said from experience that completing evaluations earlier is preferable so new board members are not required to evaluate work for which they lack background.
The board discussed meeting dates to accomplish goal setting, including the convocation on August 6 as a possible time for goal-setting work and an August 29 special meeting as a fallback. Trustees indicated they preferred to have the process wrapped up by December to align with the evaluation timeline and avoid placing responsibilities on incoming trustees.
What happens next: staff will propose dates and a timeline for goal setting and evaluation work to meet the boards preference to complete the review before December; no formal vote was recorded, but there was consensus among trustees present.
