The USD 453 Board of Education on July 14 moved forward with the first statutorily required step to consider closing the Medi Hartnett Education Center by authorizing public notice to run at least twice and planning a public hearing in August.
Staff said the notice is the first of several steps required when a district contemplates closing a school building; the district intends to publish the official notice at least twice in two consecutive weeks and to hold a public hearing, proposed to start at 6:00 p.m. with the regular meeting following shortly after.
Board members asked about contents remaining in the building. District staff and Dr. Rettelberger reported that much of the building's contents remain on site, including physical therapy equipment and curriculum materials. "There's quite a bit of stuff that we will keep there until the board makes a decision about what they wanna do," a district staff speaker said. The board indicated arrangements for moving or storing equipment would follow once a final decision is made.
What happens next: staff will publish the notices, hold the August public hearing as part of the statutory process, and then present further information and options to the board at subsequent meetings; no final decision to close was made at the July meeting.
