Board accepts Solar for Schools grant; staff outline one-year start window and long lead times

The Exeter Township School Board voted July 15 to accept a Solar for Schools grant and authorized staff to move forward with grant execution, with project timing and incentive deadlines discussed at the meeting.

Brian Fike, the district's business administrator and board secretary, told members the district must sign grant documents within about 10 days and begin work within a year to preserve incentives. "Well, this step is accept the grant. We actually have another 10 days left before we have to they take away the the grant. We have to sign the documents," Fike said at the meeting. He noted the project timeline depends on ordering long-lead equipment.

District staff said ordering the project's power converter is a long-lead procurement item with roughly a 13-month delivery timeline, and that local incentives require the district to make substantial progress by the end of next year. Staff said the board will receive a project presentation, including financial terms and timelines, at a later committee meeting before construction begins.

By accepting the grant, the board allowed staff to finalize the grant contract; the motion to approve the Solar for Schools program grant contract was seconded, reviewed by the solicitor and approved by voice vote.

Administrators said a subsequent committee meeting will include a detailed proposal showing a proposed start in late spring with a roughly three-month construction window, though the contract allows two years to complete the work. Staff said the district would seek available federal and local incentives and would provide a full financial presentation to the board before major procurements.

Board members asked for solicitor review and for a more detailed financial presentation, which staff said is forthcoming. The board approved grant acceptance by voice vote.
