County to consider repealing dormant Lake Advisory Committee after redistricting

County staff told the Mecklenburg County Board of Supervisors on July 14 that the Lake Advisory Committee created five years ago to review no‑wake buoy requests has not met since 2020 and the enabling ordinance references supervisor districts that no longer border the lakes following redistricting. The county administrator said staff will prepare an amendment to the ordinance and asked the board to consider whether to keep a supervisor‑heavy advisory committee, to convert the review to staff action, or to create a citizen advisory panel with guidance from the Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR). Several supervisors said they saw no need to maintain a committee that has been dormant and that the planning commission or staff could address requests if needed; one supervisor asked that DWR staff be involved when technical expertise is needed. The board did not vote to repeal the ordinance on July 14 but instructed staff to advertise an ordinance to repeal the committee and return next month with a formal item for board action.
