Summary
Homewood SD 153 approved a $3,150 stipend for Tanya Thomas to serve as the district's McKinney-Vento (homeless) liaison after Cece Ballou moves to a high school administrative role; superintendent will remain as a backup and additional staff may be trained.
The Homewood School District 153 Board of Education on July 14 approved a $3,150 stipend for Tanya Thomas to serve as the district's McKinney-Vento liaison, the district’s point person for families experiencing homelessness under the federal McKinney-Vento Act and Illinois implementation.
Superintendent explained that Cece Ballou, who had served in the liaison role, is moving to a position at Homewood-Flossmoor High School and the district plans to absorb Ballou’s former position. The district recommended reallocating the McKinney-Vento responsibilities among existing staff and providing a stipend to Thomas, the parent liaison at Willow School, to take primary responsibility.
The superintendent said Thomas would undergo training through the regional office and that the superintendent will serve as a backup. The board discussed training a second individual as an additional backup; the superintendent said the training was scheduled for the following week and that the district would identify others who might be trained.
The motion to approve a $3,150 stipend passed on a roll-call vote with all members present voting yes.
