Board adopts updated policies to reflect Title IX guidance; adds service-animal policy

The school board approved a slate of policy updates on second reading to align with recent federal guidance and court interpretations of Title IX and to add a service-animal policy for handling parent requests.

Dr. Aslan, who provided recommended edits to the policy packet, said the largest changes "had to do with, the federal government's, and the Supreme Court's ruling on title 9. So, a lot of policies had to be changed because there used to be a different way." He explained the district removed a prior practice in which a Title IX director could also serve as the complaint manager; the new language restores earlier wording consistent with current law.

The board also adopted a new service-animal policy drafted with assistance from the district's special education attorneys to provide a written process for responding to parent requests regarding service animals in schools. "That is not a press policy. That's the one where we need to have a policy that, so that we can fall back on something when we have a parent request for a service animal because we are, moving towards that at the high school with 1 particular student. So we needed to have a policy, and we asked our special education attorneys to write that one," Dr. Aslan said.

Board members had no additional substantive questions recorded during the vote; the update passed on a roll/voice vote recorded as "Aye" from members in attendance.

The changes are legal updates and procedural clarifications rather than programmatic shifts; the service-animal policy provides the board and staff a defined mechanism to process requests and to rely on attorney-prepared wording when assessing individual accommodation requests.
