Summary
The board approved a yearly dual-credit agreement with GAVC that adds medical assisting, modifies welding coursework, removes electrical trades and machining from the agreement for now, and aims to add FANUC robotics certifications and a registered apprenticeship with Pegasus.
The school board approved a yearly dual-credit agreement with the Galesburg Area Vocational Center (GAVC) that adds medical assisting, changes how welding credit is delivered and removes electrical trades and machining from the dual-credit arrangement for the coming year. The board voted to approve the agreement by voice vote after a presentation and discussion.
The change, presented by GAVC representative Mr. Sini, was described as a reorientation of courses to better match local industry needs. "Yes. So we've added medical assisting, and we have changed how we do welding. Still gonna get the same number of credits, but changed the classes. And then we've removed electrical trades and machining from that, agreement for the upcoming year," Sini said. He added that the district might revisit the removed programs in future years.
Why it matters: the revisions aim to align the dual-credit offerings with employer needs and expand credentialing options for students, potentially improving job placement after graduation.
Board and staff discussion focused on workforce-aligned credentials. Sini said GAVC is pursuing FANUC robotics certifications and plans to purchase a robot training cart and train an instructor to be a certified issuer of FANUC credentials. "You can take a FANUC robotics certifications to about anywhere in terms of employment," he said, and noted a new registered apprenticeship started this summer with Pegasus that he expects will help enrollment growth in machining and CNC-related roles.
Board members asked about program recruitment and partnerships. Sini said he meets with area college partners and local contacts to coordinate course content and logistics: "I met with them 3 or 4 times this year about things we could do, about, classes we could potentially offer, but also some logistical and financial aspects of that too in terms of tuition costs and equipment costs." He referenced meetings with Carl Sandburg and with local contacts Alan Burns and Carrie Hawkins to align scheduling and funding.
Discussion was characterized as informational and forward-looking; the formal action taken was approval of the dual-credit agreement as presented. The board made the approval by motion and second; meeting minutes show an affirmative voice vote with no nays recorded.
Next steps: staff and GAVC will proceed with the revised agreement and follow up on equipment purchases, apprenticeship expansion and any future changes to the program offerings as industry needs evolve.
