Martin County schools earn A; district receives $500,000 in state funding for Murray Middle rebuild

Superintendent Maine reported at the July 15 board meeting that the Martin County School District received an A rating from the Florida Department of Education and that the district has been awarded $500,000 in state funding to support rebuilding Murray Middle School, which was heavily damaged by Hurricane Milton.

"This distinction reinforces what so many of us already know about Martin County," Maine said as he described grades that improved across several schools and subject areas. He cited gains including algebra proficiency of 67% in the district versus a 60% state average and a 75% proficiency rate in biology, which the superintendent said represented a seven‑point gain over the prior year.

Maine told the board that the $500,000 award came with advocacy support from Representative Toby Overdorf, Senator Gail Haridopoulos (as spoken in the meeting: "Gail Herold"), the governor and the Florida Legislature. The superintendent said that the state funding will supplement about $1,700,000 the district already received through insurance to help cover the cost of reconstructing campus buildings that housed band, chorus and performing arts programs.

Maine said Murray Middle School recovered from a grade C to a B within the past year and that rebuilding damaged facilities will support continuing academic recovery. He said the district is appealing the grades of several campuses that missed an A by one or one‑and‑a‑half points and that the appeals were in process with the Florida Department of Education.
