Council approves funding move for Adult Probation court services pending federal grant decision

The Johnson County Council on July 14 approved a request by Adult Probation Court Services to cover the salary of an existing employee from a fee-based account through the end of the year if a federal grant is not renewed. Steve Kermode, assistant director of community corrections, said the federal grant that has supported the position for the past three years is scheduled to end in September and the department has submitted the grant for renewal but does not yet know the outcome.
Kermode told the council the request would not draw from the general fund and would be paid from the program's fee account; he also confirmed the position is a current employee, not a new hire. Council members asked whether the grant, if renewed, would replenish the fee account; Kermode said the department expected to know the grant status before spending the fee account balance.
The council approved the request by voice vote on the consent agenda. Mover and seconder were recorded as John Dittmers and Mister Mallers.
