Police roll out stolen-firearms dashboard to help residents see local theft patterns

Deputy Chief Gilder briefed the committee on a new stolen-firearms map added to the Metro Police data dashboards, designed to help residents see where firearms have been stolen from motor vehicles and to increase public awareness of securing firearms and valuables.
Gilder said the dashboards are updated frequently and users can filter incidents by time, precinct and ZIP code. He cautioned that the map reports at the 100-block level and excludes cases involving juveniles or sensitive sexual-assault offenses for privacy reasons. "One gun stolen is one too many," he said, and advised residents not to leave firearms unattended in vehicles.
Gilder noted some positive trends: motor-vehicle theft is down about 5.4% year to date, larceny (which includes thefts from vehicles) is down about 9.4% and Part I crimes overall are down about 10% year to date. The dashboard currently uses the city's present precinct boundaries and will be updated when a new southeast precinct opens.
The committee recommended residents view the interactive dashboard on the police website to identify local patterns and reiterated the department's public-education message about securing vehicles and valuables.
