Commission declines to move forward on de‑annexation request for property at 76 National Road

The Dothan City Commission did not move forward on a request to de‑annex roughly 0.95 acres located at 76 National Road after preliminary discussion during the administrative portion of the meeting.
Planning department staff explained the parcel was annexed by petition in 1993 and that state law requires the commission to adopt a resolution finding that de‑annexation is in the public health and public good before the matter may be forwarded to the probate judge. "Property was annexed by petition in 1993, and their request is to de annex, in order to, for her their grandson to attend Rehoboth Middle School," the planning director said during the staff report.
Commissioners asked whether staff had recommendations; one commissioner said they would "prefer not to DNx property from city limits," and after limited discussion the chair stated there was not a consensus to move the request forward to a resolution for the probate judge.
No resolution or vote to initiate de‑annexation was made. Staff told the property owner in attendance that commission members who wished to discuss the matter further would follow up after the meeting.
