Suffolk Planning Commission elects Staylor chairman, Hicks named vice chair

At its July organizational meeting the City of Suffolk Planning Commission elected Veil Staylor chairman with one abstention, appointed Anita Hicks vice chairman and named members of the ordinance committee.
The City of Suffolk Planning Commission voted July 15 to elect Veil Staylor as chairman and Commissioner Anita Hicks as vice chairman during the commission's organizational meeting.
The vote for chairman passed 7-0 with one abstention. The commission then approved Hicks as vice chairman by an 8-0 vote. Commissioners also approved ordinance-committee appointments: Ollie Creekmore, Mary Ellen Bauer and Commissioner Goodman were named to the committee chaired by the vice chairman.
The organizational meeting included roll call and brief remarks welcoming two newly seated commissioners, Selena Thornton Manuel and Thomas Powell. The chair noted the ordinance committee generally meets on the Tuesday before the regular commission meeting, starting at noon with a 12:30 p.m. working session. The chair said committee recommendations are brought to the full commission and typically placed on the following month's agenda for action.
Commissioners and staff also encouraged members to review the Planning Commission bylaws and procedures and discussed potential future educational sessions with the city attorney and staff to review rules and processes.
The commission approved the prior meeting minutes (one commissioner abstained because they were not present at the prior meeting) and closed the organizational portion of the agenda.
