City Development Corporation approves up to $50,000 site-improvement grant for Sonic relocation

The El Campo City Council approved a City Development Corporation (CDC) site-improvement grant to Sonic on July 14, authorizing payment of 10% of eligible site-improvement expenses up to $50,000 for a project city staff estimated at about $1.2 million.
Carolyn Gibson, CDC executive director, told the council the developer has complied with invoice review and qualification standards and that the Sonic project was unanimously approved by the CDC board. Gibson said the company currently employs 16 full-time and seven part-time workers at the old site and plans to add six full-time and 10 part-time positions at the new location.
Council members asked why the CDC supports grants for established businesses building another local location and whether the grant could be conditioned on demolition or improvement of the old site. Gibson said grants are provided when businesses apply and invest locally and noted the program pays after project completion; she also said the applicant had picked up an application for a second-site grant for demolition of the old property and estimated demolition costs at $22,000–$25,000, which would yield a modest 10% site grant if pursued.
A motion to approve the CDC site improvement grant to Sonic for up to $50,000 passed by voice vote.
