EDC staff presented three Small Business Boost grant recipients and reported progress on outreach and active projects. Staff said the grant program had issued 30 application packets, received eight completed applications and awarded three grants; the meeting included on-stage check presentations to recipients. One recipient, who identified herself as Maya Garcia, described operating a local sign shop and said the grant will help expand products and services. In project updates, staff reported Saints Engineering submitted a change-order request on June 26 for $1,800 related to Las Veil Road street-widening improvements. Staff said additional fill was required near a retaining wall to raise grade and prevent ponding, prompting the change order. Staff also noted community developments and outreach events: Ross Dress for Less opening next Saturday, a South Texas College Starr County campus expansion grand opening for automotive HVAC and welding training, and upcoming workshops in July. Staff reported an unemployment rate for Starr County at 8.9%, a 2-percentage-point decrease from the prior month. Staff said they are targeting eligible businesses for grant outreach using GIS sales data and will continue canvassing businesses to increase application completion.
