Heart of New Ulm outlines grant, health system and volunteer support for programs

At the July 15 work session, Heart of New Ulm representatives described their funding model and the data that drives program work as they answered council questions about a 2026 funding request.

Jen Mower, speaking for Heart of New Ulm, said the organization secures grants and has a strong partnership with New Ulm Medical Center. She told councilors the Allina Health Foundation has agreed to provide $25,000 a year for the next three years to support program continuity; she also said the group has successfully requested opioid-response funds from Brown County for behavioral-health and chemical-health projects and obtained a grant from South Country Health Alliance to address social isolation among 19- to 29-year-olds.

Mower added that volunteers are a significant resource: Heart of New Ulm reported more than 80 volunteers last year who contributed 1,053 hours, an in-kind value the presenter said equates to $41,909. She said the group relies on a mix of grant funding, county and health-system partnerships, in-kind volunteer contributions and other fundraising.

Discussion vs. decisions: The exchange was informational; councilors asked about sustainability and whether other funders would continue support. No binding council action was taken. Councilors thanked the representatives and asked staff to continue to include the Heart of New Ulm request in budget materials for consideration.

Next steps: Staff will include the nonprofit’s request in the draft budget; the council expects to consider final awards once levy and budget numbers are clear.
