Kent proclaims Aug. 5 National Night Out; organizers say neighborhood registration still open

Stacy Judd of the city’s community education division described how neighborhoods register and the city’s role in matching city visitors — police, fire, parks and other departments — with neighborhood events. Judd said organizers look at neighborhood needs and requests (for example, whether a site needs a water slide or a visitor such as the mayor or chief) and assign teams that typically visit three to four registered events during the evening.
Judd said 42 events were registered at the time of the council meeting and that registration was still open through July; staff expect “20, 30 more” registrations and typically host 60 to 80 events citywide. She asked residents to register and noted that the council schedules its regular meeting at 5 p.m. the night of National Night Out so members can visit neighborhood gatherings.
“We form teams made up of the different departments, and then they visit — they’re usually assigned about 3 to 4 events,” Judd said. She described National Night Out as an opportunity “for community to come together as neighbors for an evening of celebration and fun that will strengthen our bonds.”
